Independent Swiss watchmaker Oris’s partnerships with non-profit agencies is helping combat the threat to the world’s oceans. It is common knowledge that the world’s oceans are in danger. Numerous studies have shown that over-fishing, careless tourism and pollution are threatening our planet’s waters. Experts believe a quarter of the world’s coral have already been destroyed and that a further two thirds of what’s left is under threat. Something has to be done.
On June 8, 2017, Oris will join with organizations all over the world to mark World Oceans Day in drawing attention to the problem and how together we can solve it. World Oceans Day is a unique opportunity to honor, help protect and conserve the world’s oceans.
Since 2010, Oris has worked with eight marine conservation organizations, supporting their work through sales of limited edition watches. This year, the independent Swiss watch company has teamed up with the non-profit organizations Pelagios Kakunja and the Coral Restoration Foundation in its quest to bring change for the better.
Pelagios Kakunja is on a mission to better understand the movements and migratory patterns of top predators. Through sales of its new Hammerhead Limited Edition, Oris is sponsoring a project to conserve the endangered Scalloped Hammerhead in the Eastern Pacific, funding MiniPAT satellite transmitters used in a shark-tracking survey. Data gathered from these will be used to help advise government agencies on fishing practices, one of the greatest threats to sharks.
Oris is also supporting the Coral Restoration Foundation, a Florida-based organization whose pioneering projects are reversing the destruction of the world’s corals. The foundation runs outplanting programmes, repopulating damaged reefs with threatened species such as the Staghorn Coral. Oris is supporting this vital work through sales of the Oris Staghorn Restoration Limited Edition.
Oris has been making diver’s watches since the 1960s and enjoys a reputation for creating high-performance watches designed to function in the demanding conditions found underwater. This year, the Oris Aquis has been relaunched to critical acclaim. It sits alongside the Oris ProDiver and heritage-inspired Divers Sixty-Five collections.
